Turning Wastewater into Soil Enrichment Products

If you look at the natural world with a scientific eye, you’ll find that there is no such thing as “waste” in nature. Everything that is used, is reused, in a different form, in a different type of energy. Take for example a cow eating grass. The poop of the cow doesn’t go down a sewer which is then expelled into the ocean or dumped into a landfill which contains non-biodegradable materials. It’s poop goes back to the earth, fertilizes the soil, gives essential nutrients to the grass, which it then feeds on again.
Why then have we, as humans, created so many products that are nothing but “waste”? Discards that have no purpose beyond their original intended use? (e.g.- product packaging) Why do we also treat biodegradable products as if they were no longer usable? Take for instance biosolids- the remaining sewage sludge after the treatment of water. Why do we simply treat it as “waste” just because there is a mix of organic and inorganic matter in them.
Biosolids contain valuable organic matter that can be used to supplement and even replace commercial fertilizers (which can rob the earth of its nutrients when used in excess). The agriculture industry can only benefit from the return of these valuable nutrients and organics into its natural cycle.
There are companies who focus on these and we should help others find out more about the technologies they have in treating waste so that we can stop “wasting” and start truly large scale reform that matters. Switching off the lights when you leave the room can only do so much.
