Getting a Piece of the World Pie

Posted by: Singapore Entrepreneur In: Strategies & Tips|Web 2.0

I know several Singaporean micro entrepreneurs (some who are very young- JC level) who are making quite a bit of money during this downturn by providing products to overseas markets via ebay, secondlife, and even multiply. Those who have made a significant mark (selling something as simple as customized badges, rings, t-shirts) have opted to set up their own online stores to ease transactions.

There are a lot of sites that offer e-commerce solutions but I’ve found most to be terribly confusing (can’t work with my host because they have their own solutions) or filled with hidden charges. That’s until I found Interspire’s shopping cart. I was skeptical but a quick look (20 minutes) through its video tutorial and screenshots made me a believer.

First of all, there is a full control panel demo so you can test-drive before buying. There’s also around 20 free store designs to choose from so it’s really easy to set up. The search function is quite good, the ability to customize easy and for the geeks, lots to customize, and they accept all major credit cards and full integration with Paypal. There’s also a video presentation to guide you through if you don’t want to deal with looking through the site. The best part, for me, is that you can cancel at any time (60 days notice) instead of being locked up for the year, whether your online biz is doing well or not.

Of course, all this is meaningless if you don’t have something to sell … make sure you offer a unique enough product first. You also need to do marketing, don’t expect them to just come after you’ve built your online store. This is just a tool, a great tool no doubt that brings down costs tremendously, but the business principles still apply, on or off-line.

Good post my friend but I have already discovered the best shopping experience online and I get paid to do it. Can it get any better than that? It’s even free w/o having to pay a monthly membership. Wow! I can see how so many are making money setting up there on sites but why bother if you can earn money from sites that are already up and running and doing very well? Thanks for visiting my blog and I hope you will be back soon!

Ehrm … I think you didn’t read the post. I just read about your experience on your blog about shopping and getting paid for shopping/referring people. This isn’t about shopping but setting up an online shopping cart. Please correct me if I’m wrong. Cheers!

This is a good platform to know about for me since I will soon be setting up an online store. I was thinking that it would be better and more professional to use something like this instead of just allowing my shoppers to pay with Paypal on my new site. The thing is, with so many shopping cart/payment device options out there, it’s really hard to know which is the best one to go for. Thanks for the review.

If you have a lot of products to sell, I would definitely recommend interspire as it has an excellent inventory control system which prompts you when stocks are down. There are also stats to show you which items are really selling and where people are clicking and buying/or not. It also has a built in content and customer relationship management so that’s really cool. Everything’s there, including multiple currency, which is best for catering to international orders (and which I think online shops should take advantage of- having the luxury of reaching the world market).

@Matthew
A lot of people actually make a lot of money using online shopping carts – but yes, you do need to put in the work to get suppliers and processing orders.

I have to do a lot of research to do but I’m adding interspire to my list. I’ve been traveling to Vietnam since the early 90′s and on my next trip I’d like to get a website going with some type of online billing for services and a shopping cart for products. One of my bad experiences in the past was with a paypal account used as an ebay seller and ebay buyer. I bought a product for 1000 USD on ebay and it never arrived. Paypal would not refund me and ebay would not refund me and they continued to let the seller do business for almost 2 months after my first report to them and reported it to the FBI. I did a chargeback on my credit card and paypal froze me entire seller account and they took the money I had to repay the chargeback. I was a victim twice. So doing online business with shopping carts and online credit card authorization accounts is a great opportunity, but I’m going to study all the upsides and downsides before I jump in. Cheers -

So sorry to hear that. I have to agree that Paypal is not the best when it comes to customer service. My brother had a similar problem of having his account frozen for what, he could never figure out, and only to be reinstated after 3 months of going through hoops.

We use interspire ourselves and find it to be a great product. Hope you find what you’re looking for!
