Team Singapore Wins- Silver Medal Assured

table tennis feng tian wei
THIS JUST IN- After what was the most excruciating 3.5 hours of table tennis, Team Singapore has finally emerged VICTORIOUS!! We all thought that it would be a breeze after Feng Tianwei won in straight sets against the South Koreans. But when Li Jia Wei’s turn came up, it seemed like it was going to go the way of Athens all over again when she started losing her cool and hitting unforced errors against the same opponent that caused her to crash out. She did lose but won in the following doubles event with partner Wang Yuegu, also in straight sets. Afterwards, Wang Yuegu lost to the South Koreans again and the agony of defeat pounded the air. Feng Tianwei, the weakest of the 3, would turn out to be the strongest as she finished off the Koreans and has handed Singapore its first medal since Independence. What a game!

I think it would mean much more to SIngapore if the players were born, bred and trained here. That’s what I call Singaporean. THis medal’s China’s, not ours.

Say what you will- let’s face it, all Chinese Singaporeans came from China only 1, 2 or at most 3 generations ago. To insist on someone being born, bred and trained in Singapore is nationalistic folly. Consider that even the Americans have tons of athletes who have only recently emigrated and they are always looking out for more world talent to bring to their shores.

So what’s up with Singapore being so snooty that only a Singaporean who is born and bred and trained here in Singaapore can be Singaporean? Gosh, how many qualify for that, even Lynette trains in the US of A for swimming.

Stop Whining and start celebrating! :D

@photons,
I thought that was a rather narrow view. Look at it this way, Tan Howe Liang is a Malaysian when he got us the silver medal. So what’s the big fuss about? A number of us who holds Singapore passports are based overseas for most of our lives… but are we more of a Singaporeans than those PR who spends decades in Singapore? I think not.

At the end of the day, it’s really the ties that we build up that matters. As long as there are people who are willing to win medals under Singapore’s flag, I say we should give them the credit.

It’s not Chinese vs Chinese in the finals but Singaporeans vs Chinese. All the best to the Singaporean team.

I say anyone one who is world class and is willing to become a Singapore citizen should be welcomed with wide open arms :)
