Idea#2 Tips on Starting a Catering Business

Posted by: Singapore Entrepreneur In: Ideas

catering
Catering is big industry, and is one of the fastest growing food service segments in Singapore. This means the industry has a big market for new entrepreneurs. Take heart though, this statistic also means a lot of people are already in the business.

So my advice for someone who is just starting out in this very competitive but potentially lucrative field is to find out your niche market first and FOCUS.

Here are a couple of questions you need to do seriously consider before you even step into your kitchen to see if you’ve got enough space. After all, you need enough space for what? Without deciding on these questions, you won’t know what sort of preparation you will need to do in terms of the kitchen and hiring of additional help.

* WHO IS YOUR MARKET? Are you offering:
o Full-service home catering (includes chairs, tables, glassware, the works)
o Corporate catering (buffet, formal dinner, cocktail party)
o Custom events catering (children, ethnic, etc.)

* WHAT ARE THE TYPES OF EVENTS you want to cater?
o Informal home gatherings (Birthdays, Graduation)
o Anniversaries, Weddings
o Corporate Dinner & Dance
o Etc.

After you’ve decided on who your initial target market is, you’ll need to look at the following:

* To BUY or to RENT?
(Equipment and supplies you need for your catering business)
* FIND WHOLESALE food suppliers
* SET YOUR prices (learn how to prepare estimates, especially in dealing with
potential food price fluctuations)
* FOR BIG EVENTS you must have a catering contract (getting deposits, covering
for cancellations and erroneous estimates by clients)

This should be enough to get you started but you definitely should look into more information, both in terms of your market as well as the operations side (logistics) of the business.

Yeah these are basics of catering business. To get more into details, one has to study the market well, do proper survey within the reachable caterers and ask them hurdles that come there way. Quite a hard work there.

This type of business is hard work which requires that you’re constantly selling since your clients are unlikely to come back with frequency. There are also all the issues that usually apply with food businesses–perishable supplies, the need to have help the exact time and date that you need it, etc.

The income potential of catering depends on the size of the events you cater. Like any other business, however, catering requires excellent management and organizational skills for the business to succeed. Your ability to keep your operating costs down while maintaining a high quality service is also essential.
A quick survey of successful caterers across the nation shows that began with zero capital by working out of their homes. The basic starting up investment would appear to be around $500, with some big spenders capitalizing their idea with as much as $15,000 in order to get off to a fast start

This is a great read. A person who wishes to enter the catering business must be prepared to face challenges especially in a market where it’s already crowded. To succeed, you have to be able to offer something different to your clientele. This article offers a good list of questions one need to ask oneself before he joins the club.

The questions to consider are insightful and helpful. Many people don’t think before they jump. Hopefully this will slow them down and make them think before they get themselves into a massive investment. Finding a niche market is clutch for any type of business not only catering. You must ask yourself what innovative, creative advantage does my company have over the competition. If there is none, then find one.
